Math help in San Ramon, CA.

Whenever you don’t know the meaning or spelling of a word, what do you do? You probably look it up in the dictionary! As you know, dictionaries can be very handy tools that can expand your knowledge, reading comprehension, and vocabulary.

However, in order to reap their benefits, you need to use them correctly. With this in mind, this post will go over a few tips on how you can teach your child to use the dictionary effectively.

How to Use a Dictionary

  1. First and foremost, your child should be familiar with the alphabet and its order so they can effectively look up words in the dictionary. Just singing and memorizing the alphabet song can help them get through it and find the words they’re searching for.
  2. Choose the right dictionary for your child. As you know, there are different kinds of dictionaries (e.g. specialized, with translations, etc.), but it’s probable that an English paperback pocket dictionary that they can carry around easily will work best for them.
  3. Dictionaries can also help you learn a word’s pronunciation, its part of speech, and synonyms and antonyms related to it. This is why, you should teach your child about the different parts and the abbreviations used in dictionaries and what they mean.
  4. When looking for a new word, teach your child to start by searching for the first letter in the word. Once in that section of the dictionary, they can use the guide words on the top corners of the pages to quickly assess if the word they’re looking is in that page.
  5. Lastly, make sure that your child works on understanding the definition. If necessary, they can even take words from the definition and look them up to have a clearer grasp on what a word means.
