If you’re planning on going to college, you’re most likely looking into taking a standardized test. Which one should you take: the SAT or the ACT?

SAT? ACT? Which Test Should You Take?

Most colleges require that you take a standardized test as a part of their entrance requirements. You can submit your results for the SAT or the ACT. They’re both accepted, but which test should you take? The decision is entirely up to you.  It all depends on your learning style and your strong areas in school. You need to learn how the tests are different so you can make the best decision and get a good score. You will need a high score if you expect to get into your dream college. The Tutoring Center, San Ramon CA has prepared this article to tell you about the differences between the SAT and ACT.

How Are the SAT and the ACT Different?

The SAT is divided into four sections: Math, Reading, Writing and Language, and an optional essay. The ACT, on the other hand, is divided into five sections: English, Math, Reading, Science, Reasoning, and an optional essay. The main differences between the tests are the Math and Science sections. If you’re planning on taking the SAT, you should know that you can’t use a calculator on one of the math sections. If you’re not confident in your math skills and need to use it, you’ll do better taking the ACT.  The science section on the ACT doesn’t actually measure your scientific knowledge but rather your critical thinking and data analysis skills on topics related to science. Both tests last about the same time. You can complete the ACT in around two hours and 55 minutes, plus 35 minutes more if you decide to complete the optional essay. The SAT can be completed in around three hours, without the optional essay. If you choose to write it, you’ll spend about 50 minutes more completing the test. Although both tests take approximately 3 hours, one is more fast-paced than the other. The ACT has more questions, so you’ll need to go about it faster. The optional essay section is different as well. The ACT essay requires you to evaluate and analyze an issue. You will need to use your critical thinking skills to create your argument. The SAT, however, focuses more on reading comprehension. You need to demonstrate that you understood the source text.

Should I Take Both?

Some overly ambitious students choose to take both tests and submit the one with the highest score. Doing this, however, is not for all students. Studying for both exams doesn’t allow you enough time to focus on the specific material each test contains. You should stick to one exam and thoroughly prepare for it. You’ll do better on whichever test you choose if you sign up for a tutoring program to help you prepare. The Tutoring Center, San Ramon CA has an excellent SAT/ACT tutoring program to help you get ready for your test. They even have an SAT/ACT foundations program in case you’re not ready to take the test but still want to prepare. So, Which Test Should I Take?

You’re the only one who can answer that question. You need to sit down and evaluate your strengths, weaknesses, and preferences. These are some things you should consider to make a better decision.
  • Your critical thinking skills: Are your critical thinking and data analysis skills strong? They will be your primary tools to ace the ACT, especially in the Science section and optional essay.
  • Your mental math skills: Can you live without a calculator? You need to be able to do lots of mental math if you expect to do well on the SAT.
  • Your ability to handle pressure: You also need to consider how good you are at handling pressure. If you want to take your time to analyze each question or if you want to go over your test once you’re done, you should stick to the SAT.  If you do better under pressure, the ACT might be better suited for you.
  • Test center location: There are test centers all over the country, but that doesn’t mean there’s one in your town. You need to consider the distance from the test center to your home and if you’re able to go out of town to take it. You can learn all about the SAT requirements, dates, and locations on the official website. The same goes for the ACT.
