The fairy tale or rhyme is almost always one of the first things a Mother reads to her little one. Albert Einstein once quoted, “If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales.” Here at The Tutoring Center in San Ramon, CA, we have a Geniuses in Training Reading Program ™ where we teach comprehension in reading, phonics, and vocabulary. Reading books that interest your child at home strengthens these skills even further.

The Storyline

Reading fairy tales helps give your child the basic understanding of how stories are made. Character development, settings, and plot as well as the differences between fiction and non-fiction. Once your child knows this, it strengthens his ability to predict and comprehend other stories he’s reading.

Crossing Cultural Boundaries

Cinderella is one of many fairy tales that crosses cultural boundaries. Reading the different versions with their own cultural flavor tells your child that we all share something in common. People, wherever they may be, need to make sense of life through story and the hope for good to triumph over evil. It also gives your child different points of view on the same theme.

Lessons & Morals

Fairy tales are used to teach lessons and morals to our children. What can you learn from The Boy Who Cried Wolf? What about Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella or Jack and the Beanstalk? The greatest fairy tales depict character and virtue. In these stories the virtues shine, and wickedness or evil is vanquished. It makes your child consider what kind of person he wants to be.

Fairy Tales are a wonderful life lesson and reading tool for your child. Of course, some of the original fairy tales can be scary and politically incorrect. You may want to pick modified versions that you can present to your younger child to read. If your child needs a little extra help in reading or any other academic skill, call us here at The Tutoring Center for tutoring in San Ramon, (925) 362-3320.
